Staré Město (Old Town), Archaeological Site Na Valách and the Great Moravia Monument
The second archaeological locality in Staré Město will take you right to the centre of the legendary Veligrad, a Great Moravian stronghold, which was located on the site of today’s Staré Město and Uherské Hradiště in the 9th century. Research showed that socially distinct families that maintained trade contacts abroad lived here even before the origin of Great Moravia. In 1949, archaeologists managed to uncover the foundations of a mid-ninth century stone church at Valy, in its time it was the first masonry temple in Great Moravia.
The Great Moravia Monument, with a multimedia exhibition, was erected over the foundations of the church and its vast burial grounds. You can admire not only dioramas with life-size figurines in contemporary clothes, shoes, precious jewellery and replicas of weapons, but also the church foundations along with several graves and examples of work methods and processes used by today’s archaeologists.
