Staré Město (Old Town) and the Archaeological Locality Na Špitálkách
Archaeological findings of weaponry, ceramics and other items show that the territory of today’s Staré Město were already settled as early as the Palaeolithic. The archaeological site Na Špitálkách is located in the south-eastern part of town.
During the 20th century, when gravel was being excavated from the blind stream branch of the river Morava, a number of graves and settlements were found here. Often the graves were richly outfitted; among the objects found were spurs, iron knives, silver and gold earrings and buttons, coffin fittings, a round plaque with an embossed rider with a falcon and other items.
Besides the gravesite, the archaeologists also uncovered the foundations of a Great Moravian church with an apse dating from the mid 9th century, which used to stand by the gate of the so-called outer fortification and became defunct immediately after the fall of Great Moravia.
